Week Three – Day 3
TODAY’S FAST – After school or work, fast from all media technology including video games, tv, computers, and internet to spend quality time with God and your family.
In Ephesians 5:22-25, God gives a basic blueprint for interaction between the two key players in the family: husbands and wives. Consider what it says. Wives: submit to your husbands. Husbands: love your wives as Jesus loves His church.
Our culture holds fast to a hyper-level of “me-ism.” This is the notion that everything in life revolves around ME! “What’s best for me?” Combine this spirit with its partner, a strong need to protect and preserve “my rights,” and we’re hard pressed to come up with two more challenging commands than what we find in today’s Bible passage. Wives: submit. Husbands: sacrifice. Yet those are precisely the commands of God. To make some sense of this, go back and re-read these four verses and count the number of times “Lord,” “Christ” or “Savior” are used. How many? Five times! In just four verses, the Bible uses these terms five times. Maybe we’re onto something here.
God says, “Wives submit to your husbands as to Christ.” In other words, as if you are submitting yourself to Jesus Christ, Himself. “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church.” This sheds an altogether new light on these commands! Husbands and wives do these things as an act of worship. We do them unto the Lord!
In many places the Bible teaches that men and women are of equal value before God (e.g. Galatians 3:28). The message in Eph. 5:22-25 is not that women are somehow inferior to men but rather that God has a plan for the family. God calls husbands to love their wives sacrificially- to willingly and joyfully put their wives’ needs before their own. Likewise, God calls wives to yield to their husbands as the leaders of the home. God knows that this arrangement preserves order and harmony in the family while it increases love and respect among family members. This is God’s way and we are blessed when we follow it.
Pray for God’s protection of biblical marriage (i.e., one man married to one woman for life). Pray for husbands and wives to love each other deeply and to live biblically towards one another in the relationship of marriage.
“Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” Ephesians 5:22-25 NIV
